History
McPherson Museum in McPherson, Kansas, preserves the community’s historical and cultural heritage through a collection whose roots reach back to 1890, when McPherson College faculty and students began gathering geology and paleontology specimens. Its second major foundation came in 1967, when the Jacob Strausz family donated more than 400 pioneer artifacts to the city on the condition that a museum be created. That led to the museum’s establishment in 1968 through a partnership between the college and city, merging their collections. Now housed at 1111 East Kansas Avenue, the museum holds about 25,000 items spanning geology, paleontology, pioneer history, fine art, Native American history, and local history.
