Michigan City East Light, also called the Michigan City Breakwater Light, stands in Michigan City harbor on Lake Michigan as the successor to the old 1858 lighthouse after its lantern, lens, and light were moved to a new structure at the end of an extended pier. It continues a local lighthouse tradition stretching about 170 years, part of Indiana’s limited lighthouse heritage. Especially significant on the Great Lakes, it is one of the few breakwater lights that still retains the iron walkway along the top of the pier. In 2007, the Coast Guard declared it excess property, and Michigan City sought ownership of this working aid to navigation and local landmark.
