Randy's Donuts grew from Big Donut, a chain founded in the late 1940s by Russell Wendell, with the Inglewood shop opening in 1952 as the second location. Renamed in 1976 by owner Robert Eskow after his son and later kept under that name by Ron and Larry Weintraub, it became famous for the colossal donut mounted on its roof. Designed as a mid-century modern drive-up bakery with an oversized roadside sign, the Inglewood store became a defining image of car-oriented Southern California. Its visibility in popular culture and later franchise expansion only reinforced the original shop’s status as the brand’s symbolic center.
