In 1844, Ignacio Machado received the original Mexican grant known as Rancho Aguaje de la Centinela. The bean and barley fields of the old Andrew Bennett rancho became an inviting landing strip for early day pilots and later were known as Mines Field. Los Angeles City leased the site on September 20, 1928, and purchased it on October 1, 1937.
