Traveling down the Ohio after leaving Pittsburgh, Lewis recorded that his perogue, loaded with hardware intended as presents to Native Americans, sprang a leak about an hour after getting under way and nearly filled with water, soaking its cargo. Later it stuck on a bar below Georgetown, and with help from nearby people he got it over with much difficulty. At Georgetown he bought a canoe complete with two paddles and two poles for $11, but found that it leaked so badly that it was unsafe without repairs.
