Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument in New Mexico protects a striking volcanic landscape near Cochiti Pueblo, jointly managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the tribe. Established in 2001, its Keresan name means “white cliffs.” The area’s slot canyons and cone-shaped tent rocks were carved by erosion from volcanic ash and rock deposited millions of years ago from eruptions in the Jemez Mountains, creating a clear record of regional geologic history. Popular trails draw hikers between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, but fragile terrain, flash-flood danger, and exposure require careful access management, including day-use limits and a reservation system introduced after its 2024 reopening.
