The Southern Pacific Railroad built this depot in Saugus in 1887-1888 when it completed a spur line to Ventura. A variation of S.P. Common Standard No. 3, it is one of only four built in this style. Inside was a diner that moved out in 1905 and became the Saugus Café. The station agent and his family lived in the four rooms upstairs. It was used for filming by Charlie Chaplin in 1923 and others including "Suddenly" with Frank Sinatra. In 1929, a train had just left the station when it was derailed in one of the last train robberies of the Old West. The depot closed in 1978 and was saved through a huge community fundraising effort. Moved in two pieces, it became the cornerstone of Heritage Junction in 1980.
