Mogul Locomotive
Santa Clarita, California
Transportation
2
Built in 1900 by Schenectady Locomotive Works of New York, this 75-ton Mogul 2-6-0 steam locomotive served on the Southern Pacific Railroad's Yuma-to-Portland line through the Santa Clarita Valley, ran in Mexico in 1946, and spent its final years in the railroad's Tucson division. Gene Autry bought it out of retirement in 1957 for Melody Ranch, where he planned a Western Museum, but a 1962 wildfire thwarted those plans before they later materialized in L.A.'s Griffith Park. Donated to the Historical Society by Autry in 1981, it is one of only 7 surviving Moguls out of 355 built.
