Fort Fraser stood in this immediate vicinity. General Zachary Taylor established it in November 1837 during his march against the Seminoles that culminated in the Battle of Okeechobee. The Fourth Infantry erected the fort, and the Second Artillery, the First Infantry, U.S.A., and Florida Volunteers garrisoned it.
