The evolution of the road changed the look of America through the development of roadside industries. As motoring became a way of life, local filling stations became a welcome sight to travelers. Service stations and garages along the Lincoln Highway aimed to accommodate drivers' every need by supplying mechanical parts and repairs for all brands of automobiles. They offered not just refueling and oil, but also auto parts, tires, expert repair services, reasonable rates, day-and-night service, and even automobile storage. All editions of A Complete Official Road Guide of the Lincoln Highway carried advertisements and listed the number of garages in each town on the route. Product advertisements promoted claims such as pure, full-powered, full-measured, filtered gas and clean, velvety lubricants, and one garage advertised itself as a Lincoln Highway Official Garage with one of the finest garages in Northern Illinois, always prepared to take care of tourists. Livery stables and general stores originally sold gasoline from cans, but by the 1920's the filling station dedicated to the automobile had become a common sight, often built on street corners for easy access.
