Chicago’s National Hellenic Museum in Greektown is devoted to Greek history, culture, art, and the experience of Greek Americans in the United States. Founded in 1983 as the Hellenic Museum and Cultural Center, it later adopted its current name and moved in 2011 into a purpose-built home on South Halsted Street. As the second oldest American institution dedicated to the contributions of Greeks and Greek Americans, it serves both as a cultural center and community gathering place. Its exhibitions, library, archives, and oral history project preserve material from ancient Greece to the present, with particular emphasis on immigration, community life, and Greek-American heritage.
