Laid out in 1871 and named for Jas. McDade, a Brenham lawyer, McDade became a thriving town, an important freight center, and an early-day stage stop. Its School-Church was built in 1872. Vigilantes organized in 1883 lynched three men on Christmas Eve, causing a shoot-out the next day at the Rock Saloon, now a museum.
