One of two celebration cannons for Lima and Ontario was produced in 1861 by Lima Foundry at 507 3rd Street. The villages fired competing blasts on patriotic holidays, and the rivalry was fierce. The cannons would mysteriously disappear and later be found in a silo or in the Pigeon River. The contests ended when Ontario overloaded its cannon and it exploded. The remaining Lima cannon was then dedicated in memory of Civil War veterans of the Village of Lima in 1864 and stood on the campus of Howe Military Academy for many years before being relocated in 2020.
