Education in Clintonville has long been centered on this site. In 1873, a two-room schoolhouse built on land donated by the town’s namesake, Urial P. Clinton, became the town’s first building constructed solely for education. In 1918, Clintonville built its first structure intended to be used only as a high school. The firm of Parkinson & Dockendorff designed the school with as much flexibility as possible, knowing that additions would inevitably be made. These included the 1951 Rexford School Building and the 1966 Connecting Addition. As of 2023, the site serves as the Rexford-Longfellow Elementary School. Its evolution reflects changes in educational philosophy and school architecture over time, as well as the need to expand facilities as rural schools consolidated.
