Juniper Springs, in Florida’s Ocala National Forest east of Ocala, is the source of Juniper Creek, which flows toward Lake George in the St. Johns River system. Rising in a subtropical forest, the spring fills an oval pool lined with limestone caves, sand, and aquatic grasses. Protected by its forested spring shed, its water has been less affected by runoff than many Florida springs and rivers. An old Civilian Conservation Corps mill house and waterwheel reflect the area’s early recreational development. With clear 72-degree water, camping, trails, abundant wildlife, and a nationally recognized canoe run, it remains one of the region’s best-known outdoor destinations.
