On June 2, 1864, the right of Johnston’s Dallas–New Hope line, a short distance east of the road, was held by Bate’s Division of Hardee’s Corps after being pressed back by the Federal 23d Army Corps. On June 3, Walker’s Division of Hardee prolonged Bate’s line to the northeast in an effort to hold the positions, but Hovey’s 1st Division, 23d Army Corps, seized the road 1.5 miles northeast, forcing Johnston to abandon his Dallas–New Hope line and withdraw east toward the State Railroad. Johnston maintained the Dallas–New Hope line during ten days of constant battle in a rugged wilderness.
