One-half mile southwest, on Pumpkin Vine Creek, stood Brown’s sawmill, a landmark during military operations from May 25 to June 5, 1864. The 23rd Corps, moving from Sligh’s Mill, Burnt Hickory Post Office, and Owens’ Mill, occupied lines on this ridge, facing southeast from May 26 to June 2, in active support of and in line with the 4th, 14th, and 20th Corps of the Army of the Cumberland [US]. These troops faced Hood’s, Polk’s, and Hardee’s Army Corps of Johnston’s Army of Tennessee [CS]. Two notable battles of the Atlanta Campaign were fought nearby, at New Hope Church, two miles south, on May 25, and at Pickett's Mill, one-half mile southeast, on May 27.
