Coast Guard Beach
Nature
Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, within Cape Cod National Seashore, is known for strong Atlantic surf, broad low-tide flats, and a history shaped by the dangers of the Cape’s outer shore. Named for the lifesaving and Coast Guard station here, it stands near the Nauset station, one of the original federally funded rescue stations on the backside of Cape Cod, where thousands of ships were lost over centuries. The site later became the first headquarters of Cape Cod National Seashore. It is also linked to writer Henry Beston, whose nearby cottage was destroyed in the great northeaster of 1978, a storm that heavily reshaped this coast.
