Jackson Demonstration State Forest in Mendocino County, California, is the state’s largest demonstration forest, extending along State Highway 20 between Willits and Fort Bragg. Once owned by the Caspar Lumber Company and named for its founder, Jacob Green Jackson, it is also an ancestral home and ceremonial site for the Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians. Dominated by coast redwood and other conifers and hardwoods, the forest has been shaped by logging since 1862. After the state acquired the land in 1947, it was established in 1949 as a working public forest for research, management, and timber production, while remaining a place of recreational use, cultural importance, and public debate over logging.
