Fort Bragg was established in this vicinity on June 11, 1857, by 1st Lieutenant Horatio Gate Gibson of the 3rd Artillery, later a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army. Gibson named it in honor of his former company commander, Braxton Bragg, later a General in the C.S.A. The fort was abandoned in October 1864.
