Established on March 30, 1802, as part of Northampton, Gates was named on June 10, 1812, for General Horatio Gates, hero of Saratoga in 1777. It was subdivided into Gates and Greece on March 22, 1822, and is the geographical center of Monroe County, the "County Cornerstone."
