Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve protects submerged historical resources in Lake Huron off Port Sanilac, Michigan, across 163 square miles and remains open to scuba divers. It preserves part of a shoreline shaped by Great Lakes shipping and nearby shipwrecks, linking the underwater landscape to Port Sanilac’s own past as a lumberjack community first known as Bark Shanty Point before its renaming in 1857. That broader history also appears on shore in the Port Sanilac lighthouse, operated on kerosene from 1886 until electrification in 1924, and in the 1850 Victorian mansion built by Dr. Joseph Loop. The preserve is managed within Michigan’s underwater preserve system.
