A flag of the United States of America flies in honor of veterans buried in Phillips Cemetery, where the oldest known grave is that of War of 1812 veteran Dudley A. Gibson, who died in 1873. Also buried there are veterans of the Civil War from both Union and Confederate service, World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. In 2001, descendants of Randolph County pioneer and Revolutionary War veteran Thomas Phillips, Sr., who lived from 1745 to 1810, honored this legacy. Phillips, a founding trustee of the Town of Beverly in 1790, is believed to be buried on his 1784 land grant between Elkins and Beverly. The flagpole was constructed by William D. Broschart Sergeant, U.S. Army, World War II, 1921–1979.
