Smiths Ferry was an oil boom town in the 1860s and 1870s, where oil from wells in the Upper Dry Run and Island Run oilfields was shipped by train and river boat. The town had a hotel, store, post office, and train station, but all are gone today. Rockport School remains, and nearby Glasgow had oil refineries.
