Lost World Caverns, near Lewisburg in the Greenbrier River watershed, is a cave system known for dramatic formations such as stalagmites, flowstone, curtains, rimstone, domepits, and waterfalls. Once called Grapevine Cave, it was first accessible only by a vertical drop and was long used as a dumping place before surveys in 1946 and the 1960s mapped more than a mile of passages reaching 245 feet deep. A prehistoric cave bear’s remains were found there in 1967, and the cave was developed for tourism in the early 1970s, then recognized in 1973 as a National Natural Landmark. It remains both a visitor attraction and a site of geological, hydrological, and conservation interest.
