On October 17, 1777, General John Burgoyne surrendered his army to General Horatio Gates in the first surrender of a British army in world history. Included in the surrender were 30 bronze artillery pieces, twelve of them light 6-pounders. The Continental Army used the captured weapons to fight the British through the rest of the war. The two nearby light 6-pounder cannons are replicas of the type Burgoyne surrendered.
