On October 17, 1777, at this site, soldiers of the United States Army accepted the surrender of a British army, an event that forever changed the course of American and world history. The American general staff included, in the Continental Army, Major General Horatio Gates of Virginia, Major General Philip Schuyler of New York, Brigadier General John Glover of Massachusetts, Brigadier General Ebenezer Learned of Massachusetts, Brigadier General John Nixon of Massachusetts, Brigadier General John Paterson of Massachusetts, and Brigadier General Enoch Poor of New Hampshire; and in the militia, Brigadier General Jacob Bayley of Vermont, Brigadier General James Brickett of Massachusetts, Brigadier General John Fellows of Massachusetts, Brigadier General John Stark of New Hampshire, Brigadier General Abraham Ten Broeck of New York, Brigadier General Jonathan Warner of Massachusetts, Brigadier General William Whipple of New Hampshire, and Brigadier General Oliver Wolcott of Connecticut.
