Salt Lick Point was a place where salt was manufactured in early times, and Indians probably used it to obtain salt. This saline trade was one of the earliest established in the West. Gen. John Edgar of Kaskaskia was its first proprietor and put it into operation about 1802. Among its owners was a man named Boise, a resident of Harrisonville, who sank twelve wells and manufactured salt for three years, bringing a good price. The point stands 832 feet above sea level.
