White Canyon in southeastern Utah’s San Juan County runs from the foothills of the Abajo Mountains through Natural Bridges National Monument to Lake Powell, with Utah State Route 95 following much of its inner gorge and making it unusually accessible in this remote region. The canyon is notable for Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings, narrow slot sections, and Sipapu Bridge, one of the world’s largest natural bridges. Its Black Hole section is a deep, permanently flooded passage about 500 feet long, with walls narrowing to only a few feet apart. White Canyon is also dangerous because flash floods can rush through its narrows with little warning; in September 1996, a 16-year-old girl drowned there while hiking.
