Swanquarter Wilderness is a protected wilderness area within the Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina. Designated in 1976, it spans 8,785 acres and preserves a broad coastal refuge landscape of marshes and nearby open waters. It is especially important for birdlife, including wintering waterfowl such as northern pintail, green-winged teal, gadwall, American wigeon, mallard, and American black duck, as well as offshore black scoter and lesser scaup. Seasonal migrants, breeding birds, and year-round species add to its value, while bald eagles, ospreys, black bear, and white-tailed deer also inhabit the area. Today it remains important for habitat protection and wildlife observation.
