Swanquarter National Wildlife Refuge is a federally protected coastal refuge in Hyde County, North Carolina, near Swan Quarter, encompassing 16,411 acres of marsh, forest, and sound-side habitat, including all of Great Island in Pamlico Sound. Known for its rich birdlife, it supports breeding warblers, nuthatches, thrashers, blue-gray gnatcatchers, wading birds such as great blue herons, and historically nesting bald eagles and ospreys. In winter, robins, yellow-rumped warblers, blackbirds, sparrows, and northern harriers are common. Black bears, white-tailed deer, and American alligators also inhabit the refuge. About half the area is designated Swanquarter Wilderness, highlighting its largely undeveloped coastal landscape.
