Fort Holmes's Battery No. 4 was a crescent-shaped sand bastion armed with two 24-pounder and two 32-pounder cannon to guard against an enemy attack from the direction of East Beach and Bald Head Creek, and the battery and a large ordnance magazine for storing gunpowder and artillery projectiles remain essentially intact.
