Fort Holmes's Batteries No. 1 and No. 2 stood on the south end of Bald Head, a dune complex that gave the island its name. Battery No. 2 was a rectangular sand bastion located about 200 yards east and mounted a 100-pounder Brooke Cannon. The circular-shaped Battery No. 1, with its 10-inch Columbiad cannon, stood about 100 yards to the west. Both batteries had been washed away by 1884.
