This riverfront park land was enabled by the Garrards and Ellards. T.H. Ellard bought this land in the early 1920s. He died a few years later, and his wife, Mary Pearl Ellard, kept approximately 400 acres and farmed it with the help of Laurence C. Garrard. Garrard married Ellard's daughter, Lelia Belle, and, with mule and plow, cultivated the land. In 1951, the Garrards' son was born, and Garrard went to work at Lockheed. During the day he worked at Lockheed, and on nights and weekends he did the farm chores. Their son Larry grew up with farmers' values and a love of the land. Together they maintained more than 120 acres of fescue pastures, harvesting hay every summer and feeding it to the cows every winter. Laurence and Lelia Garrard lived until 1991 and 1992 respectively, when they died exactly six months apart. Throughout that time, they never accepted an offer to sell the farm, insisting that it was their home and too precious to pave and develop. That tradition continued with their son Larry, and through Larry Garrard and his family, including his son Gregory, daughter Lori, and wife Susan, the land was preserved as Garrard Landing.
