The Adams family settled French Creek Township in 1796. In 1831, James R. Adams, Sr. purchased the original 439-acre tract from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. They used water from Mill Creek to power the first woolen, grist, and saw mills and sold their mill output to early settlers.
