Old New Liberty was settled before 1800 and incorporated in 1827. Owen County was formed in 1819. The “Church on the Twins,” organized in 1801, was the first church in the county and is now the New Liberty Baptist Church. One of the earliest log cabins, built in 1806 by John Cayle, stands as part of a barn two miles east. The Gayle House was built in 1865 and for 20 years was a famous retreat for Kentucky politicians before it was torn down in 1920. The Union Agricultural and Mechanical Fair was organized in 1859. Old Concord College started in 1867 and was used until the first high school in 1906. The OWEN NEWS started here in 1868.
