The Hammonassett Tribe originally inhabited this land, and Hammonassett Beach State Park bears their name in honor of their spirit and memory. Hammonassett means "where they dig holes." The Hammonassetts fished, farmed, harvested shellfish, and hunted throughout this entire area.
