Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge spans 950 acres in ten units along 70 miles of Connecticut’s coast, protecting barrier beaches, intertidal wetlands, and island habitats on the Atlantic Flyway for migratory and nesting birds. Originating in Westbrook after Esther Lape donated land in 1972, it expanded through additional donations and acquisitions, became Connecticut’s Coastal National Wildlife Refuge in 1984, and was renamed in 1987 for Congressman Stewart B. McKinney. Its scattered sites preserve varied coastal environments, from sensitive tern nesting islands to marshes, trails, and observation areas, balancing wildlife protection with public birding and access.
