Near present-day Mobridge, South Dakota, Captain William Clark recorded seeing "White bear" tracks near the mouth of a river on October 7, 1804, describing them as three times as large as a man's track; they were actually from a grizzly bear. During the expedition, the Corps of Discovery encountered grizzly bears more than 50 times. Many were shot and killed, but some escaped. On October 20, 1804, expedition member Pierre Cruzatte shot and wounded a grizzly but retreated quickly and left his gun behind, later returning to find that the bear had gone.
