Born about 1864 in Missouri, John Luther Jones spent his youth in Cayce, Kentucky, which gave rise to the nickname “Casey.” An engineer on the Illinois Central Railroad, he was killed in a wreck at Vaughan, Mississippi, on April 29, 1900, and is buried here. His memory was preserved by a folksong originally sung by Wallace Saunders, a Black engine wiper in the roundhouse here.
