St. Mary's Missionary Baptist Church was built in 1915 on land donated by Mary Walker as a small frame building with a steeple beside the main entrance. The surrounding African American community developed after E.B. Conoley opened a turpentine still in the area and brought workers to Conway from as far away as Georgia to work in the piney woods. A one-room school behind the church served African American children in grades one through eight, and after the local turpentine industry ended, men in the community turned to picking citrus in the groves. Datson Dairy, founded by Berton Clarence Datson in 1916, was Orlando's first commercial dairy. The original dairy stood on Hourglass Lake at the corner of Cloverlawn Avenue and Curry Ford Road, its processing plant was on West South Street in Orlando, and its pastures lay between Conway Road and Lake Conway. It began with 9 cows and grew to more than 900 by 1937. After Datson was killed in an automobile accident in 1926, his four sons and son-in-law, Clarence, Theodore, Glenn, Richard, and Robert B. Dawson, took over operations, and the dairy was sold in 1951.
