William and Mary Harris Ogilvie settled this property after traveling by ox wagons from Granville County, N.C., in the late 1790s. Their nine children—Harris, Sarah, Smith, Kimbrough, John, William, Patty, Richard, and Nancy—also settled here and nearby. The family descended from the ancient Ogilvy Clan of Angus, Scotland, and had farmed in America since early colonial days. The original 1800-era log house and the adjacent Ogilvie family cemetery, established by 1807, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1998, the place was one of the state's oldest farms that had remained in the same family throughout its history.
