Joseph and Theodosia Burr Alston and their son Aaron Burr Alston were memorialized together in a family tragedy and a life of public service. Aaron Burr Alston died in June 1812 at the age of 10, and his remains were interred here. His mother perished at sea a few months later. Joseph Alston died on the 10th of Sept. 1816, a little over 37 years old, and his remains rest here with his son's. Joseph Alston devoted himself to the service of the state from early years. In the legislature he was distinguished for extensive information and transcendent eloquence, in the chair of the House of Representatives for impartial and correct decisions, and everywhere for zealous attachment to republican principles. As Chief Magistrate of the State during the difficulties and dangers of the War of 1812, he earned the respect and gratitude of his fellow citizens through indomitable activity and salutary measures. He was remembered as a great man and also a good one, meeting death with fortitude while hoping to rejoin those whose loss had left his heart in an aching void that nothing on earth could fill.
