Soft sandstone deposits built up by wind and water were later carved by those same forces into strange and fantastic shapes, and they have fascinated people for at least 5,000 years. In a photograph taken in 1925, the sculptured walls showed an absence of carvings, but the fresh scars on the canyon wall reveal that people have been quickly destroying this place of beauty.
