North Dakota Badlands

The North Dakota badlands were named because they were difficult to travel over before modern roads were built. Rain, wind, and running water have carved these hills. Their thick layers of shale and sandstone are part of the Fort Union Formation of the Paleocene Age. Once part of the High Plains, this area has been deeply eroded, and flash floods after every storm are still cutting away the rock layers.
