Fort McHenry guarded Baltimore’s harbor and was the site of the successful defense of the city by American forces during the British attack on September 13–14, 1814, an event that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” It is one of over 300 sites administered by the National Park Service.
