Founded in 1979, the Aspen Art Museum is a non-collecting contemporary art museum in Aspen, Colorado, devoted to rotating exhibitions rather than a permanent collection. Its programs present contemporary art across multiple media and include learning initiatives, talks, and a distinguished artist residency established in 2006. After many years in a converted hydroelectric plant on North Mill Street, the museum moved on August 9, 2014, to a purpose-built home on East Hyman Avenue designed by Shigeru Ban, his first such museum in the United States. The four-level building’s galleries, rooftop sculpture garden, outdoor commons, and distinctive architectural features give the museum a strong public presence.
