Fullerton Arboretum, a 26-acre botanical garden at California State University, Fullerton, grew from a former orange grove after disease damaged the orchard. Beginning in 1971, students, faculty, and community supporters transformed the land from organic gardening plots into a formal arboretum, which was created in 1976 and opened in 1979. Now the largest botanical garden in Orange County, it holds more than 4,000 plants and supports teaching, research, and public education. Its collections include cultivated, woodland, Mediterranean, and desert landscapes, along with native plants, historic crops, community gardens, Heritage House, and a museum highlighting regional agriculture and Japanese American contributions.
