St. John's Church

Construction of St. John's Church began in August 1872, with the cornerstone laid on September 4, 1872, and opening services held on October 11, 1875. Cruciform in shape and Gothic in style, the structure is made of native blue hammered limestone with red sandstone trim. A stone spire added in 1881 is highly unusual because it is made completely of stone and was reportedly one of only five such spires in the country. The interior features an oak reredos carved by skilled European craftsmen and shown at the 1893 Columbian Exposition, with a bronze panel prominently centered in it. The chancel is divided from the nave by a wrought iron rood screen. Three aisles, a vaulted ceiling with exposed decorative rafters and braces, oiled walnut and chestnut pews, beaded walnut and chestnut wainscoting, and stained glass windows enhance the space. This is the third site of the church.
