Baileys Harbor Light, near Baileys Harbor in Door County, Wisconsin, was begun in 1852 as the county’s third lighthouse, and David Ward became its first keeper in 1853. Its service was brief: an 1866 inspection judged it in very defective condition, and the light was closed in late 1869 as newer navigational aids came into use, including the Baileys Harbor Range Lights and Cana Island Lighthouse, which replaced it in 1870. The structure remains significant because it is one of only four lighthouses in the United States to retain its bird-cage lantern, a rare early lantern form, though it now stands decaying on privately owned island property.
